Golf Carts & LSVs on 30A — what you need to know
Street-legal golf carts (Low Speed Vehicles) are everywhere on 30A — but the rules vary by road, by community, and by who’s renting. Here’s the full picture before you roll.
First things first
Golf cart ≠ LSV. The difference matters.
What you see cruising 30A are Low Speed Vehicles (LSVs) — not golf carts. True golf carts are course-only vehicles and are never legal on public roads. LSVs are street-legal motor vehicles with license plates, seat belts, turn signals, headlights, a DOT windshield, and insurance.

Blue street sign — private road, HOA community rules apply
Walton County & Florida law
The rules that apply everywhere on public roads.
These are the baseline Florida statutes enforced by the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.
Roads ≤ 35 mphLSVs allowed on any county-maintained road posted 35 mph or under — including Scenic Hwy 30A.
US Hwy 98 — NOStrictly prohibited. You may only cross at a 4-way signalized intersection.
Bike paths & multi-use paths — NONo sidewalks, bike paths, boardwalks, trails, or beach. $161 fine.
Beach sand — NODriving on beach sand is prohibited. Fines and towing apply.
Valid driver’s license requiredMust be in possession while driving. Most rental companies require drivers to be 21+.
Seat belts — all passengersAll front-seat passengers and all riders under 18 must wear a seat belt. One person per seat.
Car seats for young childrenChildren 5 and under must be in a car seat or booster. No kids on laps — ever.
No open alcohol containersIllegal for driver and passengers. Same rules as a car.
Pull over for trafficWhen cars line up behind you, use a designated LSV pullover spot along 30A. Required by law.
Parking — motor vehicle spots onlyNo driveways, private property, or no-parking zones. You’re responsible for any fines.

Fines vary and can reach $500 or more depending on the violation. Some violations carry criminal charges. Always check waltonso.org/lsv for current penalty schedules.
- No valid driver’s license — fine or criminal charge
- Seat belt violation (driver or passenger) — civil fine
- Child not in car seat — fine + possible tow
- Open alcohol container — fine for driver and passengers
- Driving on bike path or sidewalk — fine
- Driving on US 98 — fine
- No registration/tag — criminal charge + vehicle towed

County roads outside the gates are open. Inside the gated HOA area: no carts allowed as of 2022.

Seaside
LSVs allowed in the commercial/dining areas and designated golf cart lots. Private residential streets (Dogwood–Natchez): outside rental ban. Visitors can cruise through on 30A but cannot park or enter private streets. Contact Seaside Town Council for a property permit.
Exclusive Provider Only
WaterColor
No ban on LSVs, but outside rental companies are prohibited. Rent a property that includes a cart, or use WaterColor’s exclusive authorized provider (Electric Cart Company). Primary renter 25+, additional drivers 21+.
Owner Carts Only
Watersound Beach
No outside rental carts behind the gates. Only owner-provided carts allowed. Watersound Inn guests may rent with restricted use — call ahead. Watersound West and Camp Creek: owners only.
Exclusive Provider Only
Prominence / The Hub
Only the community’s exclusive preferred provider is allowed. No outside rentals. Renters with a documented disability may use any provider.
No LSVs — Tow Zone
Rosemary Beach
LSVs not allowed on property and will be towed immediately. You may drive past on 30A but cannot enter or park. No exceptions for rental guests.
No LSVs — Tow Zone
Alys Beach
Complete ban — not even allowed at the Town Square. Violators are ticketed and towed. Medical exemption only: apply through the Alys Beach HOA.
No Outside Rentals
Carillon Beach
Since September 2021, no outside rental carts allowed. Only owner-provided carts registered with the HOA.
No Carts
Summer’s Edge (Ryan St)
No LSV rentals allowed. Community restriction in place.
Local tips before you roll
- →Green sign = go, blue sign = check first. Green street signs are county roads. Blue signs are private — HOA rules apply.
- →Book earlier than you think. 4th of July, Memorial Day, and Labor Day weeks book out months in advance. Six to eight weeks minimum — earlier for peak dates.
- →Confirm your exact address before booking. A home listed as “Seaside area” may actually be in the Seaside HOA — where outside rental carts are banned. Always verify with your property manager before you book.
- →Check the age requirement for each company. Some require drivers to be 21+, others require 25+. Confirm before booking.
- →Car seats are not optional. Kids 5 and under need a proper car seat or booster — same as in a car. Fines apply and the cart can be towed.
- →Stay off the Timpoochee Trail. The 18.5-mile multi-use path is for bikes and pedestrians only. LSVs are not allowed on it — not even briefly. You’ll be cited.
- →US 98 is off limits. Never drive on it. You may cross only at a 4-way signalized intersection.
- →Pull over when traffic stacks up. When vehicles line up behind you, use one of the designated pullover spots along 30A — it’s required by law.
- →You can cruise the full length of 30A. County Road 30A is posted at 35 mph or under its entire length — LSVs are legal the whole way.
Where to park your cart

LSVs park in standard motor vehicle spaces — not bike racks, not driveways, not private lots. Here’s what to know when you’re out exploring.
Dedicated Cart Parking
Seaside Town Center
Two large dedicated golf cart lots — one at the west end (near the Vin Scully mural) and one at the east end (across from Cocina Cubana). Each holds around 30 carts. Note: for visitors to the Town Center only — outside rental carts are not permitted at Seaside HOA properties.
LSV-Designated Spaces
Regional Beach Accesses (RBAs)
Several RBAs have dedicated LSV parking spaces. Eastern Lake access has 18 LSV spaces. At other RBAs, park in standard vehicle spaces.
Street Parking + Tram Option
Grayton Beach
Public street parking along 30A and DeFuniak Street. The free Grayton Beach Tram runs from the municipal lot (1505 S Co Hwy 283) if you’d rather park the cart and ride.
Standard Vehicle Spaces
Everywhere else on 30A
Your LSV parks in any legal motor vehicle space — restaurants, shops, public lots. No driveways, no private lots, no marked no-parking zones.
No Cart Parking
Rosemary Beach & Alys Beach
Neither community allows LSV parking — not on property, not at the Town Square, not in the business district. Violators are ticketed and towed. Leave the cart at your rental and drive a car.
